Paul Bergsten is an administrative professional with decades of experience in managing assisted living, independent living, and nursing home facilities. Coming from an education in history, Paul hadn’t expected to build a 25+ year career in administration, but it is exactly what he found when he took on the role of Assistant Environmental Director in 1996. But Paul’s work with Hillstone actually makes a lot of sense, as his experience working in a nursing home kitchen when he was 15 made a permanent mark on his life. “I saw people serving and I saw them being refreshed by the people they were helping — it was a true image of community, and I wanted, in one way or another, to be a part of that.”
This role with the Carriage Inn of Dayton provided him with insight and experience with how much the industry relied on wise administration. After two years of work at the facility, he moved upwards into the full role of Environmental Director at the Greene Oaks Health Center. He oversaw multiple departments, oversaw the environment of the continuing care retirement community, and implemented retention programs which improved the facilities revenue.
After a few years of this managerial position, Paul Bergsten wanted to continue his career trajectory, and entered an administrator-in-training program with the Walnut Creek Nursing Center. This experience has provided the foundation for Paul’s continuing administrative career, providing him with insights into management and administration of assisted living and independent living facilities.
His first full Administrator role was with Carington Health Systems in 2001. Here, he began a two year service which saw the transition from assisted living to skilled care beds, while also implementing cost reduction measures. In his second year here, he was granted the facilities top census award. This was Paul’s first experience in an inner-city facility, which provided him with a broader perspective and understanding of the cultures present in these facilities.
In 2003, he moved to Crestwood Care Center, where he helped ease the facility through a ownership transition. He was the company’s top financial earner for 2004-2005, and gained experience in managing a unionised workplace. While working at Crestwood, Paul joined the Ohio Academy of Nursing Homes as a board member in 2005. As a board member, he reviewed legislation in order to help protect the nursing home industry and provide needed insight to legislators. It was here that his network of nursing home professionals greatly expanded and provided him with a new resource of information and expertise to draw from.
Crestwood was a part of the Communicare group of facilities, which allowed Paul to easily transition into a new role in 2006. At this time, he became executive director of another Communicare facility: Regency Manor.
At regency manor, Paul Bergsten continued his track record of improving revenue, quality, and administration of his facilities. While here, Paul oversaw a streamlining of therapy, improving care of clinically complex patients, and raised the number of beds from 240 to 275. Thanks to this, he was responsible for a marked increase in revenue.
Having improved the Regency manor operation, Paul Bergsten moved on to become the Administrator of Villa Angela Care Center. While here, the value Paul placed in healthcare workers develops NP Insight. NP Insight was founded with the goal of better partnering with healthcare providers such as nurse practitioners in nursing facilities in order to improve quality of care, quality of life, and improve worker morale.
Paul Bergsten’s current venture is Hillstone Healthcare. Founded in 2010, is a full-service consulting and management company whose goal is to improve assisted and independent living facilities across Ohio. Paul oversees 17 homes in order to improve quality of care, quality of living, and capitalize on opportunities for growth.
